About Us

Welcome to Footprints to Adventure, a family travel blog dedicated to helping families explore the world with confidence and on budget.

Footprints to Adventure was born from a simple belief: travelling with kids doesn’t have to be difficult, confusing, or expensive. Our approach is simple: real experiences, flexible plans, and letting kids be kids.

We’ve learned first-hand that travelling with kids isn’t always smooth sailing. We’ve made the mistakes, faced the challenges, and figured things out the hard way more times than we can count.

That’s why we share honest, experience-led advice that helps other families plan trips with more confidence and less overwhelm. Join our community and you’ll find family-friendly destination guides, fun activities for kids, honest reviews, and practical travel tips designed to make travelling with children feel less stressful and far more achievable.

Two children with backpacks examine a fallen tree in the woods using magnifying glasses, surrounded by leaf litter and bare trees.
Two children walk hand in hand along a wooden pier at dusk, with street lamps glowing and a city skyline across the water in the background.
Two children sleep curled together on a bus seat, leaning against each other while traveling on a rainy day.

Travel has always been part of our story. Growing up in Armed Forces families meant moving around, discovering new places, and immersing ourselves in different cultures was just normal life for us. When we became parents to Jacob in 2016, we didn’t want that sense of adventure to stop so we kept travelling.

Like many families, our travels paused in 2020. But now, with two young boys in tow, we’re back on the road and embracing a new chapter of family travel, exploring the UK, Europe, and beyond.

We want our children to experience different cultures, taste new foods, and hear new languages – and we believe other families can do the same. By sharing our stories we hope to inspire you to get out there and create your own family memories, whether that’s close to home or on the other side of the world.

Scroll down to meet each member of our family and follow along as we leave our own Footprints to Adventure.

Lou

The image shows a close-up, partially framed selfie taken on a moving boat. An adult wearing dark sunglasses smiles toward the camera while seated beside a young child. The child faces away from the camera, leaning slightly forward and looking out toward the water. Wind lifts strands of the adult’s dark hair, and sunlight reflects brightly off the water behind them, creating sparkling highlights across the surface. A metal railing runs horizontally behind the pair, marking the edge of the boat. The water appears slightly choppy, with visible wake trailing behind, suggesting forward motion. The lighting is bright and natural, with the sun high enough to illuminate faces and water clearly. The scene conveys a sense of motion, freshness, and shared experience, capturing a candid travel moment focused more on feeling and atmosphere than posed composition. The image suggests enjoyment of time spent together outdoors, surrounded by open water and moving air.

Hey, I’m Lou and I take the bulk of managing Footprints to Adventure which means that if you’ve been browsing our posts then chances are they were written by me!

Growing up I lived in England, several places in Germany and Cyprus. We used this as a base to travel to Italy, France, Rhodes, Egypt and Austria – to name a few! Greece is my all time favourite destination, I just LOVE everything about Greece. The people are welcoming, there’s so much history and the food … need I say more!

Dream Destination: I don’t have one dream destination, I have about 5 but have managed to narrow it down to three. I want to sail through the Phang Nga Bay in Thailand, camp in Wadi Rum in Jordan and do a road trip from Texas to California. Stay tuned because we’re ticking one of these off in 2026!

Luke

This image depicts a person standing on a narrow walkway or dam beside a large, calm body of water, looking through binoculars toward the distant shoreline. The person wears dark clothing and a backpack, standing near an ornate green metal railing that runs along the edge of the path. The water stretches wide and reflective, mirroring the sky above. The sky is bright blue with scattered white clouds, giving the scene an open, expansive feeling. Across the water, a tree-lined shore is visible, with gentle hills rising behind it. The concrete walkway beneath the person’s feet appears weathered, with patches of discoloration suggesting age and exposure to the elements. The composition emphasizes stillness and observation, with the figure positioned slightly off-center, focused outward rather than toward the camera. The image conveys a quiet moment of looking, waiting, or watching nature, highlighting scale, distance, and the peaceful atmosphere of the lakeside setting.

Hi, I’m Luke and growing up I spent 14 years living in Germany. I didn’t travel a lot as a kid so I’m a bit of a late bloomer (compared to Lou) from a travel perspective but I really caught the bug when me and Lou travelled to Australia in our late teens.

I have a passion for trying new things and experiencing as much as possible. Lou’s the one with all the travel planning tips, I just like being a bit spontaneous and my idea of travel planning is watching Youtube videos on all my favourite destinations! My favourite holiday was Morocco and am looking forward to taking the boys there next year.

Dream Destination: If you know me you won’t be surprised that my dream destinations are animal focussed. I can’t wait to travel to Tanzania to do a safari and explore the rainforests of Borneo.

Jacob

This image features a young child standing alone on a narrow wooden footbridge that crosses a gently flowing stream. The child faces away from the camera, holding a smartphone up toward the sky or surrounding trees, as if taking a photograph. The bridge has simple wooden railings on both sides and leads from stone steps in the foreground into a grassy countryside beyond. Bare tree branches arch overhead, creating an intricate network of lines against a pale, cloudy sky. Moss and damp stone surround the base of the bridge, while the stream below flows steadily, reflecting muted greens and grays. In the distance, rolling fields and a winding footpath are visible, suggesting a rural walking trail. Small signs are mounted on posts near the bridge, indicating this is a managed walking route. The image feels quiet and contemplative, capturing a moment of curiosity and stillness as the child pauses to observe or document the natural surroundings.

Jacob is our eldest and already has the travel bug. He loves travelling and gets excited about learning all of the sights, language and history of the places we travel to. He’s also really good at taking pictures so he’s also a photographer for Footprints to Adventure and you’ll find many of the photos he’s taken on our site.

His favourite holiday was New York, he loved visiting the US and can’t wait to go back. Despite having a fear of heights he’s quite an adventurer and loves nothing more than a trip to a theme park to go on all the fast rides.

Dream destination: Much like me, Jacob has quite the bucket list when it comes to travel! Trying to narrow it down to a couple of dream destinations but he decided upon Texas, Japan and Indonesia to visit the Komodo Dragon National Park.

Finley

A young child stands at a high observation deck, looking out over the New York City skyline on a clear day, with the Chrysler Building and East River visible below.

Finley is the baby of the family and is mostly along for the ride when it comes to choosing where we travel and what we do when there! He’s starting to understand what the word holiday means though and the travel bug is growing as he gets older.

His all time favourite destination is Disneyland Paris for the music and parades but also gets a love for animals from Luke so always gets excited when we’re going anywhere with a zoo, farm or sanctuary.

Dream destination: Finley is low maintenance, he just loves being on holiday and is happy anywhere with a slide or a beach!

Ben

The image shows an outdoor countryside scene where a person is carefully crossing a shallow river using a line of flat stone stepping stones. The person wears muted green outdoor clothing and holds a red leash attached to a black-and-white dog. The dog steps confidently ahead, stretching forward to the next stone while the water flows gently around the stones below. The riverbanks rise into grassy hills on both sides, with moss-covered rocks and patches of bare earth visible along the slopes. The sky overhead is overcast, creating soft, diffused light that flattens harsh shadows and gives the scene a calm, cool tone. In the background, several other people stand or walk along a stone path near the river’s edge, some pausing to watch the crossing. Leafless trees line parts of the valley, suggesting early spring or late winter. The image conveys movement, balance, and quiet adventure in a natural setting, emphasizing the connection between the person, the dog, and the surrounding landscape.

Ben is our dog. He’s nearly three years old and is a mix between a Border Collie and Jack Russel so he has the energy to match two young boys! Sadly for Ben he can’t come on all of our travels with us but when we travel in the UK we bring him along for the ride.

Dream destination: In true Border Collie fashion Ben loves anywhere with no cats, space to run and plenty of different things for him to smell and pee on!
